Care More

Hi, all.
Sorry I've neglected the blog lately. First, our son has been building me a new website, so there was work on that. Then that son and his wife had a baby, and moved 4 days later. Needless to say, Grandma took a thrashing on that one (but loved it). A week later, another son and his wife had a baby. Grandma was off again for another week (and loved that, too).

Besides the holidays, I've been working to get the next book out the door, as well as make a few changes to the first one. I'm sure there's more, but you get the idea.

I wanted to share something in keeping with the season. I actually wrote the following a few years ago, but it still says a lot of good things. I hope you enjoy it.

Care More

For obvious reasons, the end of one year and the beginning of the next causes us to think about the passage of time and how we are using our resources. Are we moving toward the things we dream of accomplishing in life? Do we need to make changes to help us toward our goals? I suggest that one key to success in life is to care more.

Care more about yourself. Take care of your body and your spirit. Reduce stress in your life wherever possible. Take time for the things YOU like to do. Exercise (which is good for both body and spirit). You must feed yourself if you are going to be able to help anyone else. You can’t give from a dry well.

Care more about for your family. Nothing and no one is more important than your family. These relationships last longer than a lifetime—longer than anything on earth. Spend more time and energy helping the people who are closest to you to grow and feel joy in their own lives.

Care more about your friends. Next to the family, these people will have the most influence on your life, long-term. Help them as they reach toward their own goals. Build and help one another up the ladder of personal success. As the old saying goes, “To have a friend, be a friend.”

Care more about the quality of your work. The most satisfying work you will ever do is that in which you feel you have done your best. There is strength in the integrity of giving your all to a job. Whether the project is building a clubhouse for your kids or covering every detail of a job, knowing that you have done it right brings lasting fulfillment. (Not only that, success on the job makes your boss happy, and/or your customer happy, and that can’t be bad!)

Care more about your community. Get involved in causes that will make your neighborhood or city a better place in which to live. Someone said, “All it takes for evil to win is for good men to do nothing.” We have both the privilege and the responsibility of making our voices heard. Vote. Sign up for the food drive. Hammer nails on a Habitat for Humanity house. Attend school board and PTO meetings. Know that you are contributing to the betterment of your community.

If you care more about the things that really matter, you will put more effort into seeing that they develop the way they should. Make life your passion. Make love your creed. Make people more important than things. And as you do so, you will find that you do…

Care More.
